Yoga for a beginner is an exciting time when you start to discover all of the wonderful benefits that yoga has to offer. When you first begin yoga, there are several things you can do to make your experience positive.
Can be practiced and enjoyed by young & old, healthy & unhealthy, strong & weak. People of all ages, nationalities, races, creeds, religions & of both sexes can benefit from Hatha Yoga.
Get the most from your yoga experience:
Create an intention
Avoid eating for two or three hours before class for your own comfort
Wear comfortable loose clothing
Bring your yoga mat if you have one
Speak quietly in the practice room
Make room for others
Stay until the end of class
Turn off pagers and cell phones
Try to arrive 10 minutes early in order to relax and to avoid disturbing the class once it has started
Creat a safe practice:
Practice at your own level, balancing challenge with ease
Let your teacher know about injuries and vulnerabilities
High blood pressure: avoid inverted postures, or any position where your head is below your heart
Low blood pressure: come into and out of postures slowly
Menstruation & Pre-menstruation: listen to your body, practice at your own pace, and allow your belly to relax as much as possible. Avoid full inversions.
Pregnancy: 1st trimester - avoid vigorous practice and abdominal work. It`s okay to lie
on your belly.
2nd trimester - avoid prone postures when they become uncomfortable.
3rd trimester - Practice gently, about 50-60%, as ligaments loosen up and
can be easily over streched. Find alternatives to postures that
compress the belly.
Postnatal - practice 80% for 2 months as ligaments are still loose and
vulnerable.
